Talk about why you do or don’t think veterans preference is important to the postal service jobs.

Vets fight for our country, they should receive some consideration for their service to their country. I am a vet and not all of us can move right into a job after serving in the military. There can be a lot of discrimination against vets.

Veterans preference is fine to assist the individual in obtaining a job after service to our country but…..it should come with a little qualification. First of all it should not be a crutch that an individual can use a multiple of times throughout his career. Should it help with getting on the job, should it help with a promotion, should it help with layoffs or should it help with retirement? Once is ok but not everytime. And what about disabled vets? If they get on with a disability from the service should they be allowed to retire with the same diasability from the Post Office? How in the world can they do the job if they’re disabled? Also don’t you think that a vet who saw active combat deserves better benefits than a vet who served stateside pushing papers or driving a truck? I know plenty of vets that put in for disabilities that were caused by bar room fights, tripping over sprinklers during softball games or injuries from their own incompetence. They get a check every month, early retirement, hiring preferences etc. etc. With all that, I feel that veterans

In conclusion with all that I have said in the previous paragraph, veterans do deserve a preference, but not as a crutch for the rest of their life. There are a lot of individuals not in the service that do plenty to keep this country strong.

How do you feel about vets in general? Do you feel their service counted for anything? Do you feel they are just baby killers who rape helpless women in battlefield conditions and should be institutionalized instead of favored for their sacrifice. These are just questions mind you. Sure, a battlefield veteran has given more than a support field veteran. My father deserved more than I, he was a Bataan survivor, I was just a 5 year AF enlistee, (6 if you count the one year inactive reserve.) While in Germany, we were always under threat of attack, base perimeter was always being attacked, but few know about this. As a military man you are separated from family, you may not serve in a battle zone, but you are sent where they need you when they need you there. You are making a distinction between battlefield vets and non-battlefield vets which is your right in a free country secured by vets. You could be speaking Russian or German if it weren’t for all vets being there when needed. It takes a team of people to support just one battlefield vet, from the GSA people, the admin, supply, bomb loaders, mechanics, firemen, cooks, medical staff and more. Each one has to shoulder a firearm at one time or another in the process. I guarded F4’s in the snow for hours, but never saw any battle. I was there, where were you?
