Gas costs are skyrocketing while our time standards are bottoming out. If you use a POV how do you think the cost of gas will effect you?

gas prices are affecting us all. who can afford this? $25.00 a day ema? I’m easily just putting that in the tank. forget maintenance on my pov.

Since a year ago, I get $6.00 more a week in EMA. I spend and extra $15 to $20 a week in gas since a year ago. This does not include the recent spike in the last 2 days!! I am hoping our union fights for a new MOU to give us more EMA, because this huge increase is unprecedented!! At these prices, our EMA will barely cover gas, let alone the maintenance which has also increased in the past year. Something needs to be done, and SOON!!!

I got this message in email:

Hello all:

I know all of you are concerned about the rising cost of Gasoline and EMA. Your National Board is just as concerned! President Pitts met with Postal Headquarters today requesting relief from the rising cost of gasoline. There are several proposals being looked at by the parties. We are waiting for a response from Postal Headquarters.

Your National Board will do everything possible to seek relief for the rising cost of Gasoline.
We will keep you posted on this issue as soon as we hear from Postal Headquarters.

You seem reluctant to give us your opinion on a lot of things, including gas prices, which could be inciteful. Our comments can only go so far to stimulate conversation. I think you could add a bit of fire to the conversation if you give everyone your stance.

So you want my opinion… Well here it is, we have taken it in the shorts with the new time standards, we have been reduced in size in our routes, or have so much work to do that we drop when we get home… We have been compared to paper routes by those WHO almost dictate our low standard of living… We have suffered from the worst cost-push inflation since the Jimmy Carter administration… We have a union that has no real protection of our wages nor working conditions… We pay more taxes now after the tax cuts that Bush implemented because of the high inflation rate spurred by the low interest rates on housing loans. Low interest rates did no one a favor, it just lit a fire under rampant housing inflation and speculation… Our states tax coffers are benefiting from higher gas prices, higher property taxes, and higher taxes on all the goods and service it can collect taxes on, because they take their percentage no matter what and we are reduced in our buying power on everything, the cost of milk, the cost of eggs, the cost of groceries and we are made to subsidize the postal service with those routes who are paid EMA!

If we have a real union why hasn’t anyone ever discussed a STRIKE! We have quite a bit more power than PATCO did! Do you think that our city brother union would deliver in our place(NOT!). We don’t even equal them in pay. We get treated like a doormat on all fronts yet never do we have the courage in our leadership to get a little aggressive. Just one weeks mail, especially the week when checks need to be delivered would send people to negotiate in a hurry. The longer we work without complaining about the price of fuel, the longer management will feel that it is not a problem.

I want everyone on this blog to know that I did not post the Jake Hop posting above. Federal employees are prohibited from striking and I have no desire to strike. As for the sick out proposed, the union is prohibited from encouraging or condoning any work stopage or slow down of any kind. If some want to do this, it will have to be without the blessing of the union.

What world are some of you living in? I thought our office was crazy, but nothing even close to what I have read here. As a J46 I earn over $55,000 annually. I average less than 40 hours per week. Although we fuss a lot, we make out OK. The Association appears weak, but has accomplished some good things of late. No Union can deliver on every whim.
As for gas prices, they will drop considerably shortly. Gasoline futures are now at 2.02, which should give a price of 2.40 to 2.50. Still high, but headed in the right direction. At some point our EMA will reflect the higher prices.
The world is not ending.

My gas mileage mysteriously went down to 13mpg, that is a 4 gallon deficit out of the blue. I don’t garage my truck, (I can’t,) and my Tacoma didn’t come with a locking door or gas cap. Go figure. The locking gas caps are sold out everywhere even on the net. If you find a source for 2003 Tacoma locking gas caps….please post here.

If a strike is “illegal” and a sickout would not be nationally supported, being reasonable will certainly work. except when you enter the negotiating room enter backwards and bent over with your pants down because you might as well be prepared for what you are going to get! Unions were formed in the early part of last century by people who were so desperate from management’s “generous” offers that they died to oppose them. Of course nowadays we have a better relationship with no 80 hour work weeks, no child labor or seven day work week. All we have now though is to work that second and third job. Wait a minute….how many hours and days is that?

Does it just mean they are better at negotiating “their way” as compared to our officers not being quite the attackers? Do they come prepared with better statistics than we do? Are their lawyers smarter than our lawyers? I think we really need practiced and articulate negotiators when dealing with the USPS. They are a no-holds-barred group accustomed to head-to-head negotiating. Are our representatives that good?

Gas prices are $2.99/gal here, Kragen got the locking gas caps in, so maybe I can keep my gas. Hoping my mpg goes back up. During times of crisis they can add ethanol to the mix and that can negatively effect mpg.

mile. Additionally, the bill specifically requires the General Services
Administration, which sets the reimbursement rate for federal employees, to set

dip into their own pockets to cover the cost of doing their jobs and this
legislation would alleviate this untenable situation,” said National Treasury
Employees Union (NTEU) President Colleen M. Kelley. The new bill follows
an IRS move to increase the reimbursement rate to 48.5 cents per mile–up from
40.5 cents. Kelley said this increase was not enough. Companion legislation to
Schumer’s bill is expected to be introduced shortly in the House by Rep. John
Lewis, D-Ga.

Ron Sewell had posted that reply from Ronnie Stutts about going to postal headquarters for us about the gas prices. So how long are we going to wait for a reply?? If they are waiting for the prices to come down more, I don’t think that is gonna happen with Rita bearing down on the Gulf Coast. As a paying union member, I ask our union to get something for us now!! These gas prices are breaking us, and it is only going to get worse!!!!!

If we all want to send a message to our union leaders we should all show
up at our fall union meetings. We have two meetings a year in our state, nobody shows up for it but the same 20 people. If we had standing room only at all these meetings the union would get the point.

I am just wondering after a month after our union officials announce they went to “Postal headquarters” where is our answer?? We can’t afford this anymore!! Where are the voices?? Same as usual. They only will complain in the office to other carriers. I am so tired of this sh**!!!! Members, start to become a voice, and not just to each other!!! Where are your kahunas???????????? Sorry for that language, but after 11 years, I am so tired of this!! Stand up and shout it out!!!!!!!!!!

A raise in the EMA to realistic numbers would be nice, but I would rather have an LLV.
They pay for gas.
They pay for maintance.
THey pay for repairs. and if it breaks down on the route, they have to pay you for your waiting time.
They change flat tires and pay for replacement tires, plus pay you for wait time to get tire replaced.
Make my day, give me an LLV.

Our Union Leadership is made up of a bunch of “professionals” that took a speed test to get a job delivering mail. Where did they get their expertise in Labor Negotiation? Oh, they learned on the job from other “professionals” that took a speed test to get a job delivering mail! You get what you pay for. It might even help to get some people that are proficient at Poker who know when to show ‘em and know when to hold ‘em. Even a good bluff is important. WE NEED ACTION! It’s only going to get worse and with these trying times in the world we are only going to be “bluffed” weaker by management, who by the way hire professional negotiators from a very substantial budget provided by us.

Well here it is November 2008 and gas prices hit a sealing of around 4.30 per gallon, and now it’s back down to 2.28 per gallon. The economy has crashed and burned changing administrations for the sake of “CHANGE” Circuit City is filing bankruptcy GM and Ford are on the skids and even Toyota is hurting badly. We have invested the next generations fortunes in bailing out the economy and the only plausible reason is that we financed the 2 wars in the middle east. This is some outer limits nightmare we are living in. Rod Serling would have a field day if he were alive today.
